The Kenya Maize Development Program (KMDP) is a four-year project funded by USAID whose main objective is to increase rural household incomes by increasing maize productivity and production in target areas, increasing access to agricultural markets and business support services and improving the effectiveness of smallholder organizations. The project brings together various players through out the maize value chain including smallholder farmers, input suppliers, traders, millers, government agencies through the ministries of Agriculture and Co-op Development as well as other business service providers. With ACDI/VOCA as the main contractor, KMDP includes three sub grantees namely Kenya Agricultural Commodity Exchange (KACE), Farm Inputs Promotions Africa (FIPS-A) and the Cereal Growers Association (CGA). Implementation of the project assumes the Business Services Development (BDS) paradigm with emphasis on non-financial business services that lead to increased profitability for small enterprises. The East Africa Farmer to Farmer program in Kenya and Uganda is a five-year, commodity-driven program providing technical assistance through short-term volunteer assignments. These assignments are focused in cooperative development, and the dairy, horticulture, and maize/grains sectors in each country, and will provide a total of 94 volunteers in Kenya over the length of the project.
